At any given time there are hundreds of artificial satellites orbiting the earth. They are called “artificial satellites” to distinguish them from natural satellites such as the earth’s moon. Satellite altitudes are dependent upon the specific use of the satellite. It’s important to understand the definitions of some specific terms if one is to understand how and why a satellite is positioned in a particular orbit and altitude.

Although there are others,the three general types of orbits are geostationary, polar, and inclined orbits. For the purposes of this article, I am going to limit the topic to geostationary orbits.

One rotation of the earth takes 23 hours, 56 minutes, 4.09 seconds. A geostationary orbit is always in the same position with respect to the rotating earth. These geostationary orbits are also referred to as geosynchronous because they orbit in sync, or synchronously with the earth and appear stationary. Many geosynchronous orbits are positioned along the equator approximately 22,223 miles (35.8 km) above the earth. The satellites are commonly used for weather and storm-tracking, news agency feeds, digital radio and global televisions stations, to name a few. The popularity of this geostationary band of orbit lends itself to overpopulation of the sky with several hundred communication, TV, and weather satellites. Because of this position overcrowding, satellites must be perfectly placed to prevent interference from nearby signals of other satellites.
